Every poker game is different. The strategys and tactics that work at one table can fail miserably at the next. One table may have three or four maniacs that want to cap every pot. Another may be full of rocks with no one stepping out of line. A good poker player will use vastly different tactics to combat these two situations. The good player is constantly evaluating the game he or she is in and making adjustments in strategy. In a wild game, the player might sit back and only play the monster hands. Against a timid table, the player might look for opportunities to bet the opponents off their hands.
In online poker a table's make up can quickly change. You can be rolling along dominating a table when a new player arrives and upsets your applecart. A loose table can turn into a rock garden quickly. Your quiet sedate table can be put on tilt by a brash new arrival. So our poker tactics should be tailored to the particular cast of characters we are facing at any point in time. Players move into and out of online games so quickly that we are faced with a constantly changing situation.
We are often told that in order to beat the low limit game we just need to follow the rules. Play tight, give your opponents credit for what they represent, showdown the best hand, and so forth. That basic 'sit back and wait for the cards' strategy is all right as a starting point. Most of the time we should play a patient straightforward game. But, if we just play by the book in today's online low limit games; we're missing out on too many opportunities. The individual games are just too varied for a one size fits all approach to work well.
We are told that the more advanced moves are wasted on our unthinking lemming-like opponents. Don't fall prey to fancy play syndrome, we are cautioned. And, these cautions are right - up to a point. There are online players at the low limits that just don't have a clue. Plenty of 'em. Their poker education came from cable television or a well meaning uncle. They may have even rented "Rounders" for a weekend.
Sure there are plenty of fish. Let's just not forget the other players that swim in these waters. There are players of all abilities at the lower limits. Earnest students of the game that are progressing to the higher limits play here. Retirees who have played the game their whole lives play here. College students that are short on money but long on brainpower play here. Higher limit players who are down on their luck or are working on their game play here. It's a good bet that the table you are at has a mix of these player types.
The fact is, knowing your opponent and adjusting your tactics is important when playing online low limit poker. But because the advanced tactics that are typically employed at the higher limits work less often in low limit games, we neglect to use them in the situations where they will work. We tend to not observe our opponents as closely as we should. If your opponents are weak and timid, you should put in that raise to try and steal the pot. On the other hand if you know your opponent is a chronic calling station, a steal attempt is futile. But the question is, do you know your opponents tendencies? Have you been observing your fellow players? Do you know which ones you can push around and which one you should respect? Or, are you just playing ABC poker and waiting for the cards to fall?
If you are playing ABC or default poker, start looking for situations and opportunities to grab a pot from certain opponents. At the least, this will help you start developing the skills you'll need increasingly at the higher levels. As you become more adept at adjusting your play to better exploit your opponents tendencies, you'll start to see improved results on the bottom line. In general, play is getting better online. Just playing that ABC game is good enough to make you a break even or slightly winning player at best. Adding the skills necessary to adjust your play in order to exploit opponents tendencies could be just what your game needs.
Mastering these skills could turn you into a big winner.
History of Pai Gow Poker lies in the fascinating ancient Chinese game of Pai Gow. The original game of Pai Gow was played by the Chinese with tiles that were similar to dominoes. These tiles, or dominoes, were separated into groups by the Pai Gow dealer and then a roll of the dice determined which set of tiles belonged to which player. In the 1800's different versions of the Pai Gow game existed in China. As other games, Pai Gow is believed to have been brought into the United States in the 1800's, by Chinese immigrants who arrived to work in mines and on the railways. In Califonia, this chinese game changed its name from Pai Gow to Pai Gow Poker to get around gambling laws.
