Pai Gow Poker Strategies

by A. Aguilar

Pai Gow Poker is a game that must be played following a carefully approach, because you should balance between a strong high hand and strong low hand. Here you can find a summary of the basic strategies for this game in the following 10 simple rules of pai gow:

  1. If you have a pai gow, i.e., have no pairs, straight, or flush, use your highest card for the high hand and the next two on your low hand.
  2. If you have a single pair, without straights or flush, use the pair in high hand and two high cards (not counting the cards on the pair) in the low hand.
  3. If you have two pairs and an ace that is not part of any of them, place the pairs in the high hand and the ace in the low hand.
  4. If you have two pairs and no aces, use the highest pair in the high hand and the lower pair at the low hand.
  5. If you have three pairs, use the two minor pairs within the high hand and the highest pair in the low hand.
  6. If you have two three of a kind, use the lowest of them in the highest hand and the highest pair in the low hand.
  7. f you have a flush and two pairs... this is possible but kind of tricky, so let me explain: Let's say you have a 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 of diamonds and 2 and 5 of hearts. You can divide them to form a flush and leave the 2 and 5 for the lowest hand. But another possibility is to split the flush and form two pairs, see? So the best strategy is to divide the flush and play two pairs in the high hand.
  8. 1.If you have a straight and two pairs (this rule is very similar to the flush and the two pairs), divide the straight and form two pairs.
  9. 1.If you have a straight or a flush, use the two highest cards that you can use without breaking the straight or flush in your low hand, and let your straight or flush for the upper hand.
  10. If you have a full house, use the trio for the high hand and the pair for the low hand.

Pai Gow Poker History

History of Pai Gow Poker lies in the fascinating ancient Chinese game of Pai Gow. The original game of Pai Gow was played by the Chinese with tiles that were similar to dominoes. These tiles, or dominoes, were separated into groups by the Pai Gow dealer and then a roll of the dice determined which set of tiles belonged to which player. In the 1800's different versions of the Pai Gow game existed in China. As other games, Pai Gow is believed to have been brought into the United States in the 1800's, by Chinese immigrants who arrived to work in mines and on the railways. In Califonia, this chinese game changed its name from Pai Gow to Pai Gow Poker to get around gambling laws.
